2ND STREET DISTRICT GIVES BACK WITH FIFTH ANNUAL HOLIDAY WINDOW WALK
Local Design Students to be Awarded $5,000 in Scholarships to “Deck The District” in Window Art Competition
AUSTIN, TEXAS (November 4, 2015) – 2ND Street District (2SD) announced today the return of its 5th Annual Holiday Window Walk. Starting November 23 and running through December 5, local students will transform business storefront windows into elaborate art installations. The competition is open to theatrical design students from St. Edward’s University and University of Texas and offers them an opportunity to win collegiate scholarships. The 5th Annual Holiday Window Walk will culminate in 2SD’s annual Deck the District event on Saturday, December 5 where 2SD announces the winner.
“We are proud to continue this esteemed community holiday event,” said Shana Ogg, 2ND Street District’s Retail Marketing Manager. “We have superb competition for Deck the District this year, as well as items that you will only find in the 2ND Street District stores. There is no other holiday shopping event like this in Austin.”
The competition, hosted by 2SD, gives participating students widespread exposure for their art, including an incredible portfolio showpiece and the chance to win $5,000 in scholarships.
"This competition offers our students a great opportunity to apply their theatrical design skills to a slightly different professional application,” said Kathryn Eader, assistant professor of theatre arts and design at St. Edward’s University. “It pushes the students to really be creative in both their design-thinking and problem-solving skills in designing these eye-catching store windows. It also provides the students with a real-life experience of creating not just for their aesthetic pleasure, but instead for a client. Additionally, it provides the students with a fantastic portfolio piece and if they win scholarship money, that is an added bonus.”
2SD encourages all of Austin to take a stroll and visit the elaborate art installations, as they will be featured in over eleven storefront windows from November 23 to December 6, at Etcetera, etc., Estilo, Rae Cosmetics, Luxe Apothetique, Hacienda, Area, Hemline, Teddies for Bettys, Silicon Labs, Flor, and Mercury.
On Saturday, December 5, the winning design will be announced during the Deck the District event from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., where window walkers can stroll the 2ND Street District and enjoy a special appearance by the one and only Santa Claus, while taking advantage of the in-store specials at 2ND Street District shops. Deck the District will be free and fun for all ages.
