Block Party to Benefit Local Nonprofit Urban Roots

AUSTIN, TX (JULY 2, 2015) – Austin’s 2ND Street District is excited to announce the return of the third annual White Linen Night on Saturday, August 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The ticketed block party will feature bites from some of Austin’s favorite restaurants in the 2ND Street District as well as wine pairings. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased online at

This year, White Linen Night’s beneficiary is Urban Roots, a local nonprofit that uses food and farming to transform the lives of young people and inspire, engage, and nourish the community. The organization provides paid internships to Austin youth, ages 14-17, to work on a 3.5 acre urban sustainable farm in East Austin. The interns emerge from Urban Roots with meaningful community connections; a deep understanding of healthy eating, urban farming; and the effects of access to health food on their community; and the skills needed to be community leaders. The Urban Roots farm was affected by the recent Memorial Day flood and suffered significant crop damage as a result.

“We are so excited for the return of White Linen Night and to have Urban Roots as our beneficiary. The event, which originated in New Orleans, was to get the community involved and out of their houses during the long, hot days of summer,” says Julie Sutton, retail marketing manager of 2ND Street district. “All guests are encouraged to wear white while strolling through the 2ND Street District and stop by the shops that will be hosting in-store events and raffles.”

“Urban Roots is thrilled to be part of this special event. While we have loved seeing the lake levels rise with all of the recent rains, this farm season has been one of the most difficult and challenging. Now more than ever, we truly appreciate this support to continue growing food and nourishing the community,” says Max Elliott, executive director of Urban Roots.

Additionally, public art will be featured in free, in-store events throughout the district where no purchased tickets are necessary. There will also be an unveiling of public art that will be on display over the next year in the 2ND Street District.

Following the block party, there will be an official VIP after-party at The Bonneville from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The after-party will feature sweets, champagne punch, and much more. VIP tickets are $50, which includes access to the block party and after-party.
