We sat down with owner Daniel Berg to hear the story behind the restaurant and find out what you should order first.
Steak, Oysters & Austin Hospitality: A Conversation with VanHorn's Owner Daniel Berg
For those who haven’t visited yet, tell us about VanHorn’s. What can guests expect when they walk through the doors?
VanHorn’s is our take on the classic New York steakhouse—refined, energetic and approachable. We wanted to create a place that feels special without feeling overly formal, whether you’re coming in for oysters and martinis at the bar, a business lunch, or settling in for a great steak and a bottle of wine with friends.
How would you describe the food and overall concept behind VanHorn’s? What inspired the menu and the experience you wanted to create?
The food is rooted in the great NYC steakhouse tradition, but we wanted VanHorn’s to feel distinctly at home in Austin. The menu starts with exceptional ingredients and preparations that don’t need to be overcomplicated: dry-aged steaks, a full raw bar, seafood, classic salads and sides, along with dishes like Dover sole and our dry-aged Black Angus cheeseburger (pictured below). The idea was to take the things people love about an old-school steakhouse and present them in a way that feels relevant, comfortable and fun.

What are a few must-try dishes on the menu right now, especially for someone visiting VanHorn's for the first time?
For a first visit, I’d start with East Coast oysters or the chilled seafood tower, then one of our dry-aged steaks—the Porterhouse (pictured above) for two is a great representation of what we do. The Dover sole meunière is another favorite. And you shouldn’t overlook the VanHorn’s cheeseburger made with dry-aged Black Angus beef. It’s simple, but it’s one of those dishes that really represents the restaurant.
VanHorn's brings its own take on Texas flavors and hospitality to downtown Austin. How do those Texas influences show up throughout the menu and overall experience?
For us, the Texas influence is as much about hospitality as it is about ingredients. There’s a generosity and lack of pretension to great Texas hospitality that we wanted VanHorn’s to have. You see some Texas touches throughout the menu and beverage program—from Shiner Bock onion rings (pictured above) to Texas whiskey—but more importantly, we want people to feel genuinely welcomed, taken care of and comfortable staying awhile.
Is there a dish, ingredient, or preparation on the menu that you think really captures what VanHorn's is all about?
The dry-aged Porterhouse probably says it best. It’s a classic steakhouse cut, and there’s nowhere to hide with it—it comes down to sourcing, aging, preparation and execution. Pair it with German potatoes or creamed spinach and a great bottle of wine, and that’s VanHorn’s.
We have to talk drinks! How would you describe the beverage program at VanHorn's, and what cocktail or drink would you recommend to a first-time guest?
Our beverage program follows the same philosophy as the food: respect the classics and execute them really well. We have an extensive wine list, a deep whiskey selection and a cocktail menu built around drinks that have stood the test of time—from the Turf Club and Manhattan to the Sazerac, Old Fashioned, Sidecar and Gimlet. For a first visit, I’d order a classic martini and some oysters. It’s hard to beat that combination.
If you had to describe VanHorn's atmosphere in three words, what would they be?
Refined. Lively. Welcoming.
VanHorn's is right in the heart of the action at the 2nd Street District. Why was the District the right home for the concept?
We wanted VanHorn’s to be in a part of Austin where people already come together. The 2nd Street District has that mix of downtown energy, residents, hotels, businesses and visitors that makes it active throughout the day and into the evening. At 238 West 2nd Street, we can be a neighborhood restaurant for people who live and work downtown while also being part of someone’s experience when they’re visiting Austin.
What do you hope VanHorn’s brings to the 2nd Street District experience, both for locals and visitors exploring downtown Austin?
We hope it becomes one of those places people return to for different reasons—a martini after work, lunch with a client, a birthday dinner, brunch on the weekend or simply a great steak on a Tuesday night. For visitors, we want VanHorn’s to feel like a great introduction to Austin hospitality. For locals, we want it to become part of their routine.
As the 2nd Street District celebrates its 20th anniversary, what does it mean to join a community that has been such a longstanding part of downtown Austin?
It’s exciting to become part of a district that has played such an important role in the evolution of downtown Austin. Twenty years is a real milestone, and we’re proud to be joining the neighborhood at this point in its story. Our goal is to build VanHorn’s into a restaurant that contributes to the district for years to come and becomes a place that both Austinites and visitors associate with downtown.
